Go Between Bridge is the name selected for the bridge known as Hale Street Link, following a vote which attracted almost 5800 votes.
The name was originally short-listed for two reasons. Firstly, as a cross-river connection allowing us to easily 'go between' Milton and South Brisbane and secondly, as a reference to The Go-Betweens - an internationally influential band from Brisbane.
The name was shortlisted, alongside 10 others, from a large number of suggestions put forward by the community. The shortlisted names were put to a vote between 31 August and 20 September 2009.
The bridge was officially named by founding member Robert Forster, and six other members of The Go-Betweens, at the Community Market Day on Sunday 4 July, the day before the bridge opened to traffic.
The Go-Betweens
The Go-Betweens were a Brisbane rock band founded by singer/songwriters Robert Forster and Grant McLennan. Forster and McLennan met at The University of Queensland and released their first single 'Lee Remick\Karen' in 1978. Over the next 12 years the band gained additional members and released six albums.
Two of the group's most popular songs were 'Streets Of Your Town' (16 Lovers Lane) and 'Cattle And Cane' (Before Hollywood); the latter with its evocative opening lines: 'I recall a schoolboy coming home\ Through fields of cane to a house of tin and timber', referencing McLennan's childhood memories of North Queensland.
During the 1980s The Go-Betweens toured extensively and gained international recognition with their melodic, poetic style of pop music, which came to be seen as defining a particular Brisbane sound.
The band broke up in 1989 to be reformed by Forster and McLennan in 2000. Over the next six years with new band members they recorded a further three albums. The group continued to tour the world and build on their strong reputation. In 2006 Grant McLennan died aged 48.
The Go-Betweens are cultural ambassadors, inspiring generations of Brisbane musicians, and producing a body of work regarded as being relevant to the Brisbane experience.
