Lord Mayor Campbell Newman announces toll prices for Go Between Bridge.
Go Between Bridge toll price announced
Lord Mayor Campbell Newman has cut the $2.70 one way toll for the Go Between Bridge to $1.50 until next year as a result of a $42 million saving by Council in construction costs.
Cr Newman said the toll would rise to $2.00 for six months until 30 June 2011. The toll would then rise to $2.35 plus CPI. The cross river bridge – linking South Brisbane to Milton – is nearing completion and due to open by mid-July.
The toll reduction means Brisbane ratepayers will save around $2.5 million per year in interest alone as well as a reduction in the toll for motorists.
The 11.6 per cent project savings came through efficiencies during construction, as well as the early completion of some components of the Go Between Bridge.
Go Between Bridge is another important piece of infrastructure to tackle congestion and is expected to carry about 12,000 vehicles per day.
Motorists coming across the bridge, straight off Hale Street, into South Brisbane, are forecast to save about 10 to 15 minutes on journeys in peak hour.
Go Between Bridge will offer relief to existing bridge crossings, improving accessibility for motorists, public transport, pedestrians and cyclists.
The project features pedestrian and cyclist paths to help cater for inner city population growth, increasing accessibility to and from popular venues including South Bank, Gallery of Modern Art, Suncorp Stadium and Caxton Street and Park Road.
Remaining works include eastern deck road surface asphalting, work to balustrade or handrails across the bridge and the Bicentennial Bikeway, decorative panels on the bridge, final painting, road line marking, landscaping and commissioning of the tolling system.
To celebrate Brisbane’s newest icon, Council will hold a charity concert on the Go Between Bridge on Friday night 25 June featuring Go-Betweens legend Robert Forster and friends, singers Angus & Julia Stone and Josh Pyke as well as local acts Yves Klein Blue and the John Steel Singers. Tickets for the concert will be on sale Friday through QTIX.
A Community Market Day on Sunday 4 July will provide a free opportunity for all Brisbane residents to explore the Go Between Bridge on Sunday, 4 July prior to opening.
